THE LASER RADIATION PROPAGATION PROCESSES MODELLING FOR THE NEEDS OF THE PHOTODYNAMIC THERAPY, Stoyanka Petkova – Georgieva, Teodora Petrova
Abstract: The so-called photodynamic therapy has been introduced relatively recently in the
modern medical practice in the procedures for detection and treatment of malignant diseases by
integrating the useful characteristics of the laser beam. Therefore, photodynamic therapy is relied
on and applied by doctors as a comparatively new method but at the same time fundamental for
the process of detecting and treating malignancies. One of the prerequisites for the more difficult
recognition of this method as an alternative therapy option is that there is no exact theory for the
propagation of light in a structurally inhomogeneous environment, and experimental studies are
further complicated by the need to maintain constant structural and dynamic parameters. The
present study provides a solution to this problem by proposing a methodology for computer
modelling of the processes of laser radiation propagation and thus proves how useful
photodynamic therapy can be in the procedures for detection and treatment of malignancies using
the specific characteristics of the laser beam.
