Abstract: The publication aims to acquaint medical professionals with the indications,
contraindications and operative techniques for a successful darcryocystorhinostomy (DCR). DCR is
among the common oculoplastics surgeries performed for managing epiphora due to nasolacrimal duct
obstruction. It is a bypass procedure that creates an anastomosis between the lacrimal sac and the
nasal cavity to ensure the direct drainage of tears. It may be performed through an external skin
incision or intranasally as well as laser-assisted (L-DCR). The aim of new developments in the field of
DCR is to shorten the procedure time, to shorten patient recovery time, to decrease complication rate
and to avoid surgical skin and mucosal scars.
Key words: darcryocystorhinostomy, nasolacrimal duct obstruction, chronic dacryocystitis, neonatal
dacryocystitis, L-DCR
